Quantum Cascade lasers: towards a mid-IR comb

Jérôme Faist (ETH Zurich, Swiss)

The quantum cascade laser, based on intersubband transitions in quantum wells, is now a very attractive optical source for the mid and far-infrared region of the spectrum, covering now from 3 to 250um wavelength. It has spurred applications for environmental sensing, process control as well as for medical diagnostics. In this presentation, the state of the art of the research in the field will be reviewed, as well as recent experiments towards operating these sources as mid-infrared optical frequency combs.
