Quantum weirdness from conditional evolution

Marco BARBIERI (Institut d’Optique, Palaiseau, France)

In a classical world, it is perfectly legitimate to sort events based on a given criterion. In quantum mechanics, this apparently harmless operation might lead to anomalous behaviours of the observed system. Here we report two examples in quantum optics where post-selection not only produces ’quantum weirdness’, but also provide us with useful tools for information processing : strange weak values and a non-deterministic noiseless amplifier.
